Today, I would like to introduce “Metro Hakone(メトロ箱根、めとろはこね)” to you.

What is Metro Hakone?

The “Metro Hakone” is a convenient train that goes straight to Hakone area from some stations of Chiyoda line (One of the Tokyo metro lines). It’s designed for tourists who want to explore Hakone from Tokyo with ease and savings.

The route map of Metro Hakone

As you can see the pictures above, there are 4 stations directly connected to Hakone-yumoto station by Chiyoda line (Tokyo metro).

  • Kita-senju station (C18)
  • Otemachi station (C11)
  • Kasumigaseki station (C08)
  • Omotesando station (C04)

You can take the train at the metro platform, and without any transfer, you will reach Hakone-yumoto station after 2 hours!

Super convenient, isn’t it?

If you are staying at the hotel nearby the stations above, it is a good choice to take the Metro Hakone.

Prices

The prices of Metro Hakone

It’s a little bit complicated to understand the price system of the Metro Hakone pass, but let’s break down the details with me. 🙂

First of all, to go to Hakone, you need to pay 2 things together, ① is the fare for Odakyu line (black number on the graph above), and ② is a special fee for Romance car seat(red or yellow number on the graph above).

🎫① Fare for Odakyu line (Black Color number on the graph above)

Since Metro Hakone is automatically connected to Odakyu line from Chiyoda line, you have to pay for the fare of Odakyu line in advance. For example, if you take it from Kita-senju station, you have to pay 1,470 yen for the fare ①.

However, there is a good tip here. If you buy “Hakone Freepass”, you don’t have to pay this full price, you only pay the fare from the station that you take the Metro Hakone to Yoyogi-uehara station, since “Hakone Freepass” already includes the fare from Yoyogi-uehara station to Hakone-yumoto station. So this is the amount that you have to pay, if you have Hakone Freepass.

  • If you take at…
    • Kita-senju station (C18): 260 yen
    • Otemachi station (C11): 210 yen
    • Kasumigaseki station (C08): 210 yen
    • Omotesando station (C04): 180 yen

🎫② Special fee for Romance car seat(red or yellow number on the graph above)

For the Odakyu line Romance car, you have to pay a special fee. (特急料金、とっきゅうりょうきん)It is the red or yellow number on the graph above,

  • Red: If you buy on the Internet, you can buy with the red-colored price, 50 yen cheaper than yellow-colored price.
  • Yellow: If you buy at the station with paper ticket, you can buy with the yellow-colored price.

Tips for Using the Metro Hakone
